By Peggy Loh -
WHEN E.S. Luke, the MSVCR representative for the South region, saw me at
the Estate Run, he insisted that I meet Eli Solomon, vice president of
MSVCR and editor of its magazine.

Eli with his 1969 Lancia Fulvia 1.3 Rally Sport. |
Luke informed me that Solomon had written a book, Snakes & Devils, on
the history of the Singapore Grand Prix, an event that enjoyed its peak
between 1961 and 1973. The book was launched last month.
Solomon introduced himself as a “sarong-wearing, spear-throwing native
of Singapore.” The 44-year-old investment banker had started his
research on motor sports in Malaya but with the F1 in Singapore this
year, he decided to focus on Singapore’s racing history instead.
His research took him to as far as Andorra in the northern hemisphere
and to Auckland in the southern hemisphere, and almost everywhere in
between.
For five years, he interviewed former drivers, sponsors and other key
people, garnering valuable materials including rare archive photos, film
footage and never-before published photos from private collections.
The pictorial format Snakes & Devils chronicles the 13 golden years of
Grand Prix racing in the republic, with an appendix of lap records and
race winners for all the different classes.
What did the title mean?
Solomon explained that in those days, Grand Prix races were not held in
racetracks but in the city streets. The challenging twists and often
dangerous turns at street corners thrilled spectators to bits and race
enthusiasts gave them exotic names that evoked exciting images of snakes
and devils!

Note: Snakes & Devils - A History of the Singapore Grand
Prix is published by Marshall Cavendish and available at all quality
book stores in Singapore. It will also be available at select book
dealers in the UK and Australia.
Footnote: This event took place earlier
in the year and was marred by a horrific case of vandalism (given the
offensive word scratched on the car it certainly reeked of
ANTI-SEMITISM) aimed at the
Vice President and his Lancia, the result of which is that he has had to
take a firm stand on vandalism and remove himself from any association
with such a club.

Racing history in the Singapore media
Singapore's Automobile Association finally catches on and represents a
piece of history in its Highway Magazine, Mar/Apr 2008. Has the taboo
tag associated with racing and historic finally been buried?
